The story of Mbah Gandrung Puppet play is based on "Wangsit" to perform such as:
• Damarwulan
• Barong Skeder
• The core content of the story or is the story of the puppet Mbah Gandrung Majapahitan.

3. Fiddle

Type the barrel gamelan rhythms not pelog nor selendro. Yes so it is. Gamelan can not rhythmic harmony as gamelan Puppet. Gendingnya only awun - awun, jakung with crazy - crazy (asmaradana). Puppet Mbah Gandrung has no "singers" - the singer accompanied by gamelan. So when it is staged only 5 participants puppet performers are: 

 
a. 1 Mastermind / Puppeteer
b. 4 gamelan players (Gong, Xylophone, fiddle and Kendang)

And plus 4 people bearer puppet on the way.
Staging Puppet Mbah Gandrung is between the hours of 10:00 noon till 13:00 (1 pm). And the night between the hours of 21:00 (9 pm to 24.00 (12 nights) depending on the request that has vow. When the stage lights for night illumination is "blencong" (lamp oil or coconut oil kelenthik). Remainder of the oil that is in blencong not be used to fry, because this is a testament. Just simply it is used for hair oil alone or oil to rub on the hands or feet (body) only.
Another great feature is the puppet leader Mbah Gandrung story waiting to be staged puppet of the "DI" (hint unseen) to the mastermind.

Meaning puppet "Gandrung" is happy. Glad to here is happy to help a fellow / human being who has the problem in order to live happily. Wayang Mbah Gandrung consists of Mbah Gandrung Kakung (male) and Mbah Gandrung Puppet Princess (female). So call it simply "Grandma Gandrung and Nyai Gandrung"

The main characters in the Wayang Mbah Gandrung are:
1. Puppet Mbah Gandrung Kakung
2. Mbah Gandrung Puppet Princess
3. Joko Luwar
4. Raden Sedono Popo. (As Senopati or warlords)

Joko Luwar is a symbol of that speech or promise (vow already implemented = successfully overcome the trouble).

Mbah Jimbun Sultanate is "Ancestor" or the first chronicle Pagung area. Mbah Jimbun is a Knight of the palace were held Lelono (traveling to gain knowledge about kaweruh kejawen) from the royal kingdom is thought keturunun Majaphit or may be derived from Surakarta or Yogyakarta palace but it was not clear. He was in the area Pagung because "mbentur topo" – meditation or trying to acquire knowledge by way of penance to remote areas. When opening settlement Pagung  area is still a wilderness.

Meanwhile Supani, Pagung village chief, who holds position as the local cultural leader of  Mbah Gandrung adds that the wayang is  "digebyakne" - staged in Suro in the Javanese calendar or Muharram (Hijiriah calendar) every year. Regarding the day, depending on the agreement indigenous elders Puppet Mbah Gandrung include: (the late Lamidi grandma), grandma puppeteer, and other elders.

The origin of the existence of Puppet Mbah Gandrung is being asked of the elders, both Lamidi grandma, grandma and Supani , Village Chief Pagung too, when contacted separately, they seem to give the same answer that is by champion - mbah or their ancestors that it is an unsolved mystery.

However they - each provide a similar story about the origin of puppets Mbah Gandrung.
The origin (Sangkan Paran) Puppet Mbah Gandrung can be summarized in the following story:

Long long ago in the area Pagung rained hard, then the river inundated Pagung area to the township. When the river streamed there a large teak and came running environment of the citizens.
Society tried to restore the wooden timber back to the river but it showed peculiarities. Every time washed away into the river rose wood as if it would pull drift.
When was the attempt to bring it to Raden teak Jimbun Sultanate, an elders 'Ancestor' the settler of  Pagung area.

Being old and an administrator he understood the system so he ordered the government to bring the wood to the Ki demang. Demang at the time was Raden Proyosono.

Demang is a government position in the Dutch era. While the title of Raden is the title given to the relatives of the palace as the aristocracy.

Ki demang Raden Proyosono knew the large teak then he ordered them to cut for fuel or wood used for building houses.
But what happened, wood and even then still showed oddities. No one was able to split it. So Ki demang hold a contest who could chop the wood teak would get a prize.

Then came a handsome young man from the mountain of Wilis. He followed the contest and the teak wood splitting. And strangely, in the teak wood there were two wooden puppets. Puppet figure illustrated a handsome knight and the figure of a beautiful woman.

After a split in the handsome young man went before the prize was awarded, and disappeared. Ki demang from the palace could feel the strangeness of it and got a "DI" or clues that wooden puppets depicted two lovebirds were "Gandrung". means crazy in love.

Due to its uniqueness  teak was then owned by Kidemang Raden Proyosono given the title "Puppet Mbah Gandrung".or WAYANG MBAH GANDRUNG.

At first the two wooden puppet that was stored in a wooden crate from around the teak wood is washed away.
A few days later ki demang got another clue that he was given a wooden puppet depicting a handsome young man and could fix the problem. And furthermore it turned out that too wooden puppets appeared to exist on its own.
Because Ki demang was intuitive to it - that sort of thing, then he gave the name of the third wooden puppets as "Joko Luar" means a youth who could solve the problem and got a puppet again as the R. Sedono Popo as Senopati or Warlords.

Then the puppet Joko Luar and R. Popo Sedono rose in the box to enter Mbah Gandrung puppet. The box came from the teak wood drifted in the river as well.

2. Mbah Gandrung Puppet Princess
3. Puppet Joko Luwar
4. Puppet Sedono Popo (Senopati = Warlord)

While the puppet Semar is a protector for the Java community. However, the figure of puppet Semar in Mbah Wayang Gandrung is different from Semar in Wayang shadow puppet (purwo). This is one of the uniqueness of the Puppet Mbah Gandrung.

Figure Semar puppet Mbah Gandrung long and curly haired and face almost like a figure in Togog puppet of puppet leather - Another puppet puppet figure of approximately 40 additional pieces with figures such as wayang kulit (purwo) in the form of clothing or jewelry, and remained the same there was no definitely a name like shadow puppet figures and it was made of wood.

Rituals for staging puppet Mbah Gandrung is holding the traditional Javanese cuisine. It is for salvation.  The common ritual dishes are "Tumpengan" slaughter the rooster or cock is a prerequisite. Roosters are usually cooked in one whole chicken without cutting into pieces . The state of a whole chicken is usually called the "chicken ingkung (engkung)" from the word "mekung-kung" – stretching state of the content removed or slaughtered with offal and left lying in the kuwali (traditional soil made pan for  rice or water). Ingkung ordinary chicken cooked in cooking or seasoning yellow lodoh. baked or grilled chicken. Besides ingkung also added chicken with white rice or savory rice or yellow rice. It is also accompanied by other side dishes such as "sambal fried potatoes / meat". Then  more extra typically yields such as cassava, tubers, nuts, fruit or other crops farmers. The foods are often eaten together. In summary the food "Tumpengan" for salvation is:
1. Rooster ingkung
2. White rice and yellow rice cone-shaped
3. Additional side dishes
4. jenang plots (white) and porridge abrit (red)
5. crops such as yams, peanuts, Uwi, gothe
6. and many other extras.

In staging puppet shows Mbah Gandrung, selametan prayer leader was Mbah Kandar puppeteer. In reading a prayer or mantra  using Java language.

Here is excerpts prayer led by Mbah Kandar before staging Puppet:

"... Wiwitan dateng nenuwun marang Gusti ingkang sampun maringi Seger kuwarasan dumateng we sedoyo tyangsepuh you anem ingkang Rawuh dateng mriki sedoyo, mugi - mugi kaparingono Seger kuwarasan slamet Wilujeng sedoyo ......" -

"First of all asking the Almighty God bestow upon us all good health of young and old who have come here, hopefully all get health and safety and welfare of all" ........ (Nggih = yes, uttered by the audiences)
